Getting Your Eyes Tested?
This Is How We Do It…
Welcome and Pre-Screening
Your journey begins where you are welcomed by our gracious and friendly staff who will proceed to take your basic information for your doctor’s card, and you are then pre-screened for the eye exam. This simply means you are placed on a machine called the Auto Refractor where your eyes are analyzed and then we test the pressures in each eye. This data is then attached to your card and passed on to our optometrist. The eye examination can take from 20 minutes to 45 minutes to be completed (this can vary at the discretion of the practitioner). Complaints and concerns should be shared initially with the optometrist to establish a proper foundation to build upon. General health complications must be communicated honestly because they can have a direct impact on eye health. This can help guide the process along to attaining an accurate diagnosis for your eyes.
Acuity and Refraction Tests
A vision acuity test would then be conducted where you would be asked to read off letters of a standardized chart out loud to determine the smallest letters you can see on the Vision Chart. Then the refraction test is conducted where you will be required to view an eye chart through a special device called a phoropter, which has many different lenses. This assessment helps your eye doctor determine if you need vision correction, as well as the corrective lens prescription that will help give you the sharpest, clearest vision. They would then proceed to take a look into the back of your eyes where they shine a light through the retina with an Ophthalmoscope, which can identify the health conditions of your retina, as well as the arteries, veins, nerves, and lenses in your eyes.
Final Steps
A slit lamp test is where a microscope is used to check the front of the eye. It’s the best instrument used for examining the eyelids, tissues, and skin around the eyes. It’s a common part of a routine eye exam. If you are visiting your doctor for a special eye condition, like conjunctivitis, this tool is used to see the redness and irritation more clearly. Our Colour Vision tests are (if deemed necessary) conducted mostly on young boys seeing that they can usually be the ones that may be more susceptible to suffer from colour blindness. All these results combined guide our Optometrists to determine your prescription specific to your exact needs for Eyeglasses or Contact Lenses. This information will then be communicated to the floor staff and then you are guided to choose your brand-new frames.
